During National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15–October 15), we celebrate the culture and contributions of Hispanic/Latino people, which have enriched our great nation for generations. It’s also a fitting time to highlight the importance of diabetes prevention for this higher-risk group.
Over their lifetimes, 40% of US adults are expected to develop type 2 diabetes. That number is even higher for Hispanic/Latino adults—more than 50%.
There often are no clear symptoms, so if your heritage is Hispanic/Latino and you have any of the risk factors below, it’s important to talk to your doctor about getting your blood sugar tested:
  •  Being overweight
  •  Being 45 years or older
  •  Having a parent or sibling with type 2 diabetes
  •  Being physically active less than 3 times a week
  •  Ever having gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy) or giving birth to a baby who weighed more than 9 pounds
Sooner is better than later, because research shows that making healthy lifestyle changes can help prevent or delay type 2 diabetes by up to 58% in people at risk. Now that’s something to celebrate!
